Tumwater Washington Real Estate

Tumwater hill looking into Olympia JBLM Fort Lewis Real EstateTumwater Washington is located just south of the State Capital of Olympia, many consider them to be sister cities, with both having grown together in the 150 years or so since they were first settled.

Home sales in Tumwater, WA have been brisk in spite of the national slowdown of the real estate market.  New development, and the eagerness of the city of Tumwater to manage its growth, while stimulating the economy has led to many new construction homes being available, as well as charming older homes and many with a rural or county feel.

The population of Tumwater is comprised of state workers, military personnel and others who work in the surrounding areas.  Recently we have seen an increase in the number of folks commuting to the area, some from as far a Portland and Seattle.  People who like the rural small town feel, with close proximity to the city center have flocked to the area.  The other draw for people commuting is home prices here versus the larger cities.  A home costing $500, 000 in Seattle can be had in Tumwater for half the price.

Thurston County Washington, home to Tumwater, WA, boasts a population of about 250,000.  These residents occupy a mix of city, rural and agricultural properties.  Tumwater’s population was 13,000 in the 2000 census, and has doubled since then.

Tumwater was originally settled with the name of “Bush Prairie” by George Washington Bush, a former slave and cattle rancher.  The city of Tumwater was founded in 1846 by settlers who named it “New Market”, it was the first United States settlement on Puget Sound.  It’s name was changed to Tumwater and it was incorporated in 1875.

If you are relocating to the area, Tumwater, WA and the greater Olympia, WA region is a paradise for outdoor and sports enthusiasts.  Salt water fishing in Puget Sound is only the start.  In just a little over an hours drive you can be at the ocean beaches, about the same distance in the opposite direction is skiing in the cascade mountains, and activities, sporting events and nightlife abound just to the north in Tacoma and Seattle.

In June 2007, the average home sales price for a single family home or condo in Tumwater, WA was $299,374. While this data is collected from the MLS and deemed reliable, it is not guaranteed.
